Delicious Expeditions in Norway
Experience Norway!
September 3-10, 2027
Boat Journey Add-on:
Bergen to the Arctic Cirlce
September 10-16, 2027
Discover the best Norway has to offer. We’ll travel from the cosmopolitan city of Oslo to the fjords and farmlands of the west. Journey through dramatic mountains and picturesque villages, painted red, yellow, and blue, as cascading waterfalls and verdant valleys lend an unforgettable backdrop that leads us to Bergen, a thriving city of beauty and art. Along the way, we’ll delve into Norway’s culture and history, its vibrant, ever-evolving cuisine, and unique way of life.
Our stellar accommodations begin in downtown Oslo at the Savoy 1918, a 5-star Belle Époque hotel that’s a member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World Collection. In Voss, we’ll enjoy the picturesque countryside at Store Ringheim, a family-run farm with a boutique, antique-filled hotel and award-winning restaurant. In Bergen, we’ll be at the 4-star Det Hanseatiske Hotel, a unique property set inside the original Hanseatic trading houses directly on the wharf. This UNESCO-protected area is one of the best-known examples of Norwegian urban life from the Middle Ages … but don’t worry, we’ll have modern amenities.
To truly see Norway is to travel its coast and explore its islands and fjords. For that reason, we’re excited to offer a 6-night add-on adventure from Bergen to the top of the Arctic Circle on a battery-operated (that means silent and exhaust-free) ship. This experience is not a cruise rather a voyage. Originally, the ships that hugged Norway’s west coast were called “mail boats,” since they delivered mail and needed supplies to out-of-the-way communities. Over time, they added cabins for locals to access easy travel. Now, some ships offer comfortable accommodations with amazing scenery throughout the day. Information on the voyage will be available on November 10th.

Discover the beauty of Oslo with a walking tour that takes you from the scenic waterfront with its landmark Opera House, past the medieval Akershus fortress, and onto the Royal Palace with its pristine gardens. Lunch along the way, sampling local specialties such as bolle—baked cinnamon buns with cardamom, smoked trout salad, and fresh lingonberries. Free afternoon to explore; visit the Viking Ship Museum, which houses its historic longships.

Travel by train to Vestland County in central Norway. Enjoy the picturesque scenery full of colorful villages and bold landscapes. In Mydral, we’ll transfer to the Flám Railway, considered one of the world’s best train journeys. The trip, in rail cars dating from the 1930s, will take us through 20 tunnels and past deep ravines with cascading waterfalls as we descend toward the village of Flám and the head of Aurlandsfjord. Explore the area before heading to Store Ringheim, a traditional Norwegian farm dating from the 1300s.
———————————————————————————————————————————
We’ll spend our morning foraging in the nearby woodlands and scouring the farm’s fields to gather ingredients for a cooking demonstration of local delights. Visit nearby farms to see their production of juices, jams, and apple cider. Enjoy some free time to explore the area, considered Norway’s premier hub of outdoor recreation.
———————————————————————————————————————————
After a luscious farmhouse breakfast, we’ll head to Bergen via a scenic route of hills and valleys. Stop at Tvindefossen, known as Norway’s fairytale waterfall. Visit the factory outlet of Dale of Norway, a textile mill since 1879. Countryside lunch before arriving in Norway’s 2nd largest city, known for its colorful wooden houses, picturesque wharf, and vibrant culture. Settle into Det Hanseatiske Hotel.

As a UNESCO World Heritage City and a European City of Culture, Bergen has a lot to offer. We’ll first explore Bryggen, the former center of the Hanseatic League's trading empire, which, beginning in the 15th century, dominated Europe for almost 300 years. We’ll walk down narrow passages, visit fortresses, and peruse the aisles of the seafood market, sampling their offerings. Free afternoon to explore the city’s world-class art scene. Peek into galleries and design shops; take the funicular to the top of Mount Floyen for amazing views.
———————————————————————————————————————————
We’ll explore the nearby area, starting with Havra Cluster Farm, a historic settlement of farmhouses and a testament to the former way of life. Visit Fantoft Stave Church, built in 1170, on our way to Nordhordland, a scenic area of deep fjords and alpine mountains. Farewell dinner in Bergen.
